About Oaxaca
Oaxaca de Juárez, or simply Oaxaca, is the capital and largest city of the eponymous Mexican state of Oaxaca. A short flight from Ciudad de México (CDMX), the city is located in the Central Valleys region, in the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains.
The area is home to colonial-era structures as well as significant archeological sites and elements of the continuing indigenous Zapotec and Mixtec cultures. Together with the nearby archeological site of Monte Albán, Oaxaca was designated in 1987 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Come for the unforgettable landscape and the multitude of varieties of mole (recipes that take days, and the knowledge passed down from generations, to make!) — and stay for the region’s many mercados (markets); vibrant and unique, indigenous arts and crafts; and to experience firsthand why it is that they refer to the foods and beverages of Oaxaca quite simply as the “elixir of gods.”
At week’s end, you’ll depart having experienced all the ways Indigenous, Spanish, and contemporary Mexican culture come together in this magical city… leaving with an intimate understanding of all the secrets, shortcuts, and even surer routes to happiness that exist in the warm embrace of nuestra amor Oaxaca — our love, Oaxaca.
