Our Commitment to Sustainability

At ATAXITO, our commitment to sustainability and sustainable travels begins with respect — for place, people, and the pace of life in the communities we visit. Here are a few of the regular practices we employ on all of our small-group tours to minimize any negative impacts on the environment and local communities, while maximizing our positive contributions and ensuring that the destinations we bring our traverlers to like Oaxaca, México, remain vibrant for future generations.

Our trip practices include measures which protect the natural environment, support local economies, and respect and empower the local culture carriers who welcome us into their workshops and homes. Such as:

  • ATAXITO journeys are designed around the principles of slow, purposeful travel: staying longer, moving less, and connecting more deeply. Basing our programs in a single hub — like Oaxaca City — allows us to minimize transit impact while exploring its nearby towns and villages through thoughtful day trips, organized to minimize mileage.

  • We prioritize low-impact transit (walking tours and shared vans), support circular economies by encouraging guests to purchase directly from artisans and small family enterprises, and practice minimal-waste hospitality through reusable dishware, refillable water systems, and partnerships with eco-conscious guesthouses.

  • Guests are encouraged to bring and refill their own reusable water bottles — with filtered drinking water always provided — helping to eliminate single-use plastic waste. Each itinerary also only features seasonal, locally sourced menus and foods that celebrate Oaxaca’s biodiversity and culinary heritage.

  • We are also mindful of Oaxaca’s fragile water supply, encouraging our guests to be conscious stewards during their stay. We promote time-efficient bathing, reuse of towels and linens, and partner with lodging that practices rainwater collection for non-potable uses — small, thoughtful steps that collectively make a difference in a water-scarce region.

  • Our small-group model ensures a light footprint and fosters meaningful exchange between travelers and hosts.

At ATAXITO, our approach to sustainable travel is a living practice of reciprocity.

Every one of our journeys seeks to honor the land, the culture, and the people who sustain it, ensuring that the rewards of travel flow directly back to the communities that make it possible.
